Warhawks look to make NCAA Division III championship history this weekend

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is certainly no stranger to winning national championships.

The men’s basketball team will be in search of the third NCAA Division III national title this weekend out in Salem, Virginia.

The UW-Whitewater football team is just three months removed from capturing a third consecutive national title and fourth in the past five seasons.

Whitewater is in line to make Division III history this weekend.

If Pat Miller’s team captures the 2012 men’s basketball title the school would become the first to win both a men’s basketball and football national championship in the same academic year.

It hasn’t been just football and men’s basketball that has flourished in the national spotlight in recent years.

The 2005 UW-Whitewater baseball team brought home the Division III national title. Women’s volleyball has been among the national elite on an annual basis. The volleyball team captured national titles in 2002 and 2005.

“When I arrived in Whitewater as the new UW-Whitewater athletic director in 2004 I had a vision,” Paul Plinske indicated on last Saturday’s KOOL 106.5 postgame show. “I wanted to ‘raise the bar’ and have our teams strive to get to the national championship. The results have been truly amazing.”

“Pat Miller and his basketball program have worked tremendously hard year after year and came up just short in its playoff runs. I’m just so excited that men’s basketball will have its opportunity to play for a national title this weekend.”
